I agree with Jennie about the title of the book being about both the past and the future of LuLing and Ruth. I think that the title also connects all of the women in the book. Precious Auntie had difficulties connecting with LuLing at the end of her life. LuLing and Ruth have difficulties connecting and understanding each other now. The fact that all of them are descendents of a bonesetter brings them together and connects them, even if it's on a very basic level.
